Two new Kayaking Trips for 2008 with Piragis and Worldwide Paddling Adventures

Paddle Uummannaq Greenland during the Summer Solstice

I’ve always wanted to see the Uummannaq Fiords during the peak of the summer solstice. With a warming climate in Greenland over the last 10 years the pack ice is melting sooner each spring. Now we can safely plan a kayak trip in the fiords in the month of June. June being the sunniest month in west Greenland is also the peak of the arctic wildflower bloom and the height of bird nesting season. It will be the high arctic in high season.

Uummannaq is my personal favorite place to kayak and camp and I hope you’ll consider joining me on this new adventure in the land of 24 hour sun. Limited to 8 clients and two guides.

We are currently working out the details of this trip, but this is what we know so far:

Starts in Ottawa on June 17. Fly from Ottawa to Iqaluit and on to Qaarsut and Uummannaq. Spend two nights at Hotel Uummannaq and paddle, hike and camp for 12 days amid the splendor or the sun splashed arctic landscape. Return to Uummannaq on July 1 and fly to Illulisat and Kangerlussuaq and back to the US on Air Greenland to Baltimore on July 3.

We're making ice on the lakes here and we've gotten some fantastic snow these last couple of days, so Ely is beginning to look like a winter wonderland. We're estimating 8 inches of fluffy blanket to help build a good base here and more to come. The temperatures have dropped down as well. Today our high was supposed to reach 13 degrees, but for most of the day it stayed under 10.
