Just in time! The ice on Boundary Waters lakes is going out as I write this on Tuesday afternoon. I expect that by Friday all area lakes except the deepest and largest will be open water. The lakes that might very well be ice covered on Saturday for the fishing opener are: Snowbank, Burntside, and Basswood’s biggest bays, Kekekabic, Thomas, Gabimichigami and the large mass of Lac la Croix on the US side of the border. Many lakes in Quetico could still be ice covered. Deep lake trout type lakes with small watershed areas are the most likely to go our last. These would include: Agnes, Kahshahpiwi, Sarah, McIntyre, Argo, Kawnipi and the deep bays of Crooked Lake. Off the Gunflint Trail Saganaga is always one of the last lakes to lose ice. There are no guarantees that I’ll be right about any of this. The dynamics are pretty complex but for sure spring always comes and lakes will suddenly all be blue again very, very soon. It’s a great time to be on a canoe trip. If you are out there you’ll see ice chunks floating or watch black ice break up and disappear almost magically in a few hours or overnight. Come on up this weekend and watch the show happen.
