“Facing North”: Portraits of Ely. Book signing and exhibit:

Facing North
Portraits of Ely, Minnesota
Photographs by Andrew Goldman
Essays by Ann Goldman
Foreword by Jim Brandenburg
Publication date: May 2008

From June through August of this year, residents and visitors alike will be able to view an exhibit of photographs taken from Andrew and Ann Goldman's new book Facing North: Portraits of Ely, Minnesota. Viewers will be introduced to such "characters of Ely" as: Will Steger, world-famous arctic explorer; Seraphine "Sludge" Rolando, retired miner, welder, and artist; the Nordic Wolves, the girls of Ely High School's cross country ski team; Doctor Frank Udovich, dentist and accordion player; Lisa Pekuri, bookstore curator and scuba diver; and more.

In Facing North, Ann and Andrew Goldman offer a revealing portrayal of the unique people who call Ely home. Featuring more than one hundred portraits as well as vivid essays, Facing North tells the story of life in this Northwoods community: its breathtaking beauty, surprisingly diverse character, and complex history. A thriving destination area, Ely is a changing community, yet its traditions remain vibrant and strong. From resort owners and fishermen to canoe makers and artists, Facing North is an evocative tribute to the enduring nature of Ely and its people.

Piragis Northwoods Company is proud to be the host exhibit for the show, featuring large-format black and white images which will be displayed on the second floor, at Lisa’s Second Floor Bookstore. On Saturday June 7th, an opening reception and book signing will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. with the authors and many of the individuals featured in the book. A second book signing will be held on July 5th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

In addition to the main exhibit at Lisa’s Bookstore, twelve other businesses in the downtown area will each display one photo in their store front window, allowing viewers to take a walking tour of the exhibit. Store locations are listed on a ‘Facing North’ postcard, available at Piragis.

The Facing North exhibit is presented by Ely Greenstone Public Art and funded by grants from the Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature and The McKnight Foundation.
This hardcover book is made possible in part by a grant from the Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust, and is available at Piragis for $34.95.

Howling with the Boundary Waters Wolves

Sign up now for this GUIDED and FULLY OUTFITTED Boundary Waters Adventure August 23 – 29

Join us August 23 – 29 for the Howl with Wolves Boundary Waters Canoe Camping trip.  This unique and unforgettable experience begins with a day at the International Wolf Center in Ely.  We will spend the afternoon learning all about wolves through the center’s many educational displays.  Even better, we will be able to see live wolves in the protected area around the International Wolf Center, an environment that duplicates their natural habitat in every detail.  We’ll have the opportunity to observe this magnificent creature in a way most of us can only dream of.

After becoming more familiar with wolves, their habitat, and their history, our evening of howling will get us in the mood for our canoe trip.  The next morning, we will embark on our journey through the wilderness of the wolf.  We will be entering pristine wolf habitat, where, if we keep our eyes and ears alert, we may be lucky enough to see one in the wild.  The trip route includes the chance to see waterfalls, pictographs, and maybe even floating bogs, along with fishing, hiking, and relaxation opportunities.

from a previous Wolf Trip client, "I was very, very pleased with the trip.  The price was reasonable, the equipment was great; the food was excellent and all the people we met at Piragis were terrific, both to and from the events, and in the store.  And we couldn't have picked a more beautiful week, weather-wise.

The highlight of the trip was Steve Johnson as our canoe guide.  He was great!  We had utmost confidence in his leadership and he never steered us wrong.  We were given the special lecture and went out looking to locate wolves in the wild.

Again thank you for everything you did to make it a terrific experience."

In addition, this time of year is great for canoe camping; moose are gravitating to the cooler water, biting insects are few, and wildlife in general is more active day and nigh—not to mention the comfortable and inviting weather.  Don’t forget to bring your camera so you can capture the amazing scenery, wildlife, and good old-fashioned campfire fun.

The trip includes three nights stay in an Ely hotel, the International Wolf Center experience, five days of paddling, four nights of camping, plus a fantastic opportunity to see wolves in the wild.  The cost is $1095 (+ tax) for 2 to 4 guests or $895 (+ tax) for 5 to 7 guests.  This is one wilderness experience that you will not want to miss.

"Buried Treasure"

On the Iron Range, the surging commodities market may bring prosperity. But it might also threaten one of the state's greatest natural resources.

"DEEP IN MINNESOTA'S NORTH WOODS, a doughy 24-year-old in a flannel shirt and camouflage baseball cap turns the wheel of a Ford F-150 pickup to steer from a paved two-lane highway onto a dirt road. As he taps the accelerator, majestic pines and birch rise out to the horizon. A few minutes later, a desolate clearing materializes on the right, stretching for at least a mile. "That's the Dunka pit," the driver says. "It was mined out for iron ore."

The truck rumbles on. The woods, still and quiet, have again closed ranks around the road, which grows narrower and bumpier. "Duluth Metals bought up a lot of this land for exploration," the driver says. "We'll see what happen."

Winter Wall Tents from Snowtrekker on Special

Our winter camping tents have been rented just one season. We purchase new gear every season and pass the savings on the rental gear on to you.

Tent Fabric
A breathable 6.5 oz. high thread count tight weave cotton duck treated with Sunforger™ Marine water repellent finish and durable flame retardency to CPAI - 84 standards. 100% Handcrafted in the USA.

Easton 7075-T9 Aluminum Poles
Snowtrekker™ tents feature Easton aircraft-grade 7075-T9 aluminum tent poles. T9 is the highest temper rating an aluminum alloy can receive. Through a rigorous process of heat treatment, artificial aging and cold-working, the poles achieve a tensile strength of 96,000 PSI. So you get an extremely strong pole for very lightweight.

The best tent poles provide a rigid, solid base, are durable and lightweight, and hold precise dimensional characteristics. Easton’s 7075-T9 poles are produced to a T9 temper for the best possible combination of stiffness and toughness.

Shokcord
Freezing conditions, stress and heavy use can make poor quality cord dangerous. We use only the cord specified by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in all of their personal shelters, rated for arctic temperatures.

Anodized
Only Easton aluminum tent poles, made in the USA, are hard anodized, for the maximum possible protection against corrosion and wear. This proprietary process is more complicated than typical, cheap, soft anodizing used in inferior tent poles. Our tent designs demand reliable performance year after year, and the Easton anodize is the best.

How easily does the Tent Set Up?
Snowtrekker™ tents are quick and easy to set up thanks in part to our new Easton tent poles—a feature that is great after a long day on the trail in poor conditions when you just want to get the tent set up quick.

The pole system is internal. Basically it is a saw horse configuration with 2 welded aluminum spiders as a union for the ridge pole and the 4 legs. The legs and the ridge pole are 3/4" Easton aluminum tent poles that break down to a package about 28" long and 5" in diameter. The pole sections are bungee corded together.

Waterproof Immersion Pack from Granite Gear reviewed by NEW YORK TIMES

Granite Gear's Immersion Pack has always had top billing from canoe trippers. When the New York Times gear review crew got their hands on one, they liked it too.

Granite Gear set their standards high when they decided to develop a welded waterproof portage pack. The goal: a fully waterproof pack that offered the comfort and durability people have come to love in their Expedition Series Portage Packs like our best-selling Superior One Portage Pack.

This pack had to stand up to the rigors of the BWCAW and QUETICO PARK. They chose a 500 denier fabric with a Beefy TPU laminate to be waterproof, durable and weld-able. The pack features the exact same shoulder straps and belt from the Expedition Series with an innovative way to attach them to a fully welded pack without compromising how waterproof the pack is or hurting the comfort level in any way.

A full roll closure is easy to load and tight as can be. Keep your pack (and more importantly everything inside) DDRRRRYYY. Dry! This is the one some of you have been waiting for!
