News from Piragis Northwoods Company and the BoundaryWatersCatalog.com:
New Books Online (over 250 additional titles)
Did you know that our bookstore has more than just guidebooks? Since 1979 we've stocked the best of the best for the Boundary Waters and Quetico but since 2000 we've expanded to one of Minnesota's most sought out Independent Bookstores.

Our bookstore shelves grace the upper floor of Piragis Northwoods Company and we are the place to go when you want something new to read in Ely. We do special orders everyday for titles we may not have in stock and we're constantly restocking the shelves and looking for what people are reading and talking about.
This week we took the time to upload over 250 new books to our online catalog. Many of these recent additions fall under the category of "Adventure" titles and some are of a local interest to the Ely Area. Our next focus for adding books will include titles of the Home Improvement/Decorating/Remodel/New Construction flavor. Look for these titles in the new Home and Garden Section in coming weeks.
The simplest way to browse these new books is to look in our "new" section online, just click here: http://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com/new.htm?viewfrom=1
Join Steve Piragis this Fall in Vietnam as he guides for Worldwide Paddling Adventures.
More than just a spectacular place to kayak, Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, a community of permanently nomadic boat people live their entire lives on water among the 3,000 islands. In our travels through the Ha Long archipelago, we will discover the beauty of the limestone caves, delight in fresh seafood each day, and observe the unique lifestyle of the Vietnamese fishermen.

Facing North: Portraits of Ely book signing and exhibit TOMORROW, June 6th at PIRAGIS:
Facing North
Portraits of Ely, Minnesota
Photographs by Andrew Goldman
Essays by Ann Goldman
Foreword by Jim Brandenburg

In Facing North, Ann and Andrew Goldman offer a revealing portrayal of the unique people who call Ely home. Featuring more than one hundred portraits, as well as vivid essays, Facing North tells the story of life in this Northwoods community: its breathtaking beauty, surprisingly diverse character, and complex history. A thriving destination area, Ely is a changing community, yet its traditions remain vibrant and strong. From resort owners and fishermen to canoe makers and artists, Facing North is an evocative tribute to the enduring nature of Ely and its people.
Piragis Northwoods Company is proud to be the host exhibit for the show, featuring large-format black and white images which will be displayed on the second floor, at Lisa’s Second Floor Bookstore. On Saturday June 7th, an opening reception and book signing will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. with the authors and many of the individuals featured in the book.
This hardcover book is made possible in part by a grant from the Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust, and is available at Piragis for $34.95.

How you feel after you buy a canoe (used or new) from us!
"Hi Steve,
I am so very pleased with the Wenonah Advantage I picked up. It is in great condition just like you said. I wanted to let you know what a pleasure it was working with you folks. I ended up driving all the way up on Friday and after I picked up the canoe first thing Saturday morning, I headed back.
It ended up being about a 14.5 hour trip each way. It was well worth it. I got some great pictures Saturday morning, and my only regret is that I didn't have more time to spend in Ely and the Boundary Waters. I will be back for sure, possibly later this summer in fact. I have never experienced such great customer service from one place before. I walked into your store first thing Saturday morning shortly after six and the girl at the counter (didn't catch her name) was very friendly and helpful.
Burt rang me up for the purchase and I believe the gentleman's name that helped me unload/load my canoe was George. I've told everyone that will listen how much I enjoyed the trip. I'm sure my wife is getting tired of hearing about it.
Thanks again for everything. I'll look forward to doing business with you again (I'll be after a Minnesota II in a couple of years).
best wishes for a great paddling season,"
-Corey

Howling with the Boundary Waters Wolves
Sign up now for this GUIDED and FULLY OUTFITTED Boundary Waters Adventure August 23 29
Join us August 23 29 for the Howl with Wolves Boundary Waters Canoe Camping trip. This unique and unforgettable experience begins with a day at the International Wolf Center in Ely. We will spend the afternoon learning all about wolves through the center’s many educational displays. Even better, we will be able to see live wolves in the protected area around the International Wolf Center, an environment that duplicates their natural habitat in every detail. We’ll have the opportunity to observe this magnificent creature in a way most of us can only dream of.
After becoming more familiar with wolves, their habitat, and their history, our evening of howling will get us in the mood for our canoe trip. The next morning, we will embark on our journey through the wilderness of the wolf. We will be entering pristine wolf habitat, where, if we keep our eyes and ears alert, we may be lucky enough to see one in the wild. The trip route includes the chance to see waterfalls, pictographs, and maybe even floating bogs, along with fishing, hiking, and relaxation opportunities.

from a previous Wolf Trip client, "I was very, very pleased with the trip. The price was reasonable, the equipment was great; the food was excellent and all the people we met at Piragis were terrific, both to and from the events, and in the store. And we couldn't have picked a more beautiful week, weather-wise.
The highlight of the trip was Steve Johnson as our canoe guide. He was great! We had utmost confidence in his leadership and he never steered us wrong. We were given the special lecture and went out looking to locate wolves in the wild.
Again thank you for everything you did to make it a terrific experience."
B. Sawyer
In addition, this time of year is great for canoe camping; moose are gravitating to the cooler water, biting insects are few, and wildlife in general is more active day and night, not to mention the comfortable and inviting weather. Don’t forget to bring your camera so you can capture the amazing scenery, wildlife, and good old-fashioned campfire fun.
The trip includes three nights stay in an Ely hotel, the International Wolf Center experience, five days of paddling, four nights of camping, plus a fantastic opportunity to see wolves in the wild. The cost is $1095 (+ tax) for 2 to 4 guests or $895 (+ tax) for 5 to 7 guests. This is one wilderness experience that you will not want to miss.
Call Bert or Drew today, 1-800-223-6565 to sign up to howl with the Boundary Waters wolves!
