News from Piragis Northwoods Company and the BoundaryWatersCatalog.com:

"Simplicity in all things is the secret of the wilderness and one of its most valuable lessons. It is what we leave behind that is important. I think the matter of simplicity goes further than just food, equipment, and unnecessary gadgets; it goes into the matter of thoughts and objectives as well. When in the wilds, we must not carry our problems with us or the joy is lost."

Saturday is a tour of homes in Ely for Energy Efficient Ely (E3)

Self-guided Tour
Homes are open from Noon to 4 pm on Saturday, May 23rd

1. Isabella Eco house Nancy Schlutz NOTE THIS Home is open 10 am to 4 pm. - Take Highway 1 toward Isabella. Turn off Left at the National Forest Lodge Road. It's a condo/resort area. Go to the right. Fire # 9926. The Isabella Eco Home is a 2,100 sq. foot lake home designed with an experimental Thermal Storage System and features that will qualify it for Leed Platinum, German Passivhaus standards for efficient energy use and Forest Stewardship Council certifications.

2. A Laundry Room - The newly renovated laundromat at 428 East Sheridan Street is owned by Rebecca Spengler and has recently converted to Solar Water Heating for laundry.

3. Bradley Home - The Bradley home 18 miles east of Ely off the Snowbank Rd. Travel about 18 miles east on the Fernberg Rd and go left on the Snowbank Rd. Take a right at fire number 3062 which is about a mile down on the right. This is an off grid solar electric installation done by Greenstone Renewable Energy of Ely. 365-7779. Tom Strom of GRE will be on hand to explain the system.

4. Andy and Paula Hill Home - This owner built home is located 8 miles south of Ely off Hwy 21 and 1 mile down Bear Island R. Rd. Go left at fire #2164. The home uses lots of passive solar and wood for heat. Active solar is used to heat water and to generate all the electricity needed for the home. This is a great opportunity to see a total off grid home just outside Ely. Andy is a solar designer and planner marketing solar water heating panels. 235-8686

5. Steve and Nancy Piragis Home - located one mile down Wolf Lake Rd on the right just past a big red barn. Wolf L. Rd is itself about 6 miles west of Ely on Hwy 169. (See map on reverse). The home is a timber frame built in 1990 and heated with wood until this year. The new system is a dual fuel geothermal system with gas backup. The system used heat from the ground supplied through over a mile of plastic pipe buried 8 feet deep in 9 200’ trenches in the back yard. The system also provides air conditioning in summer thru in plenum heat exchanger and distributed through ducts by forced air fan. The Piragis home system was installed by Nortemp Heating and Cooling of Eveleth. 218-741-8886

6. John Duke Home – This home is located at 211 E. Boundary Street in Ely. Travel south from downtown on Central Avenue and then turn left on Boundary and proceed to the third block.  John has installed a solar hot water heating system with a roof mounted solar panel, a drain-back system, differential temperature control and a tank heat exchanger. 235-8078  Bill Tefft will be on hand to explain the system.

The mission of Energy Efficient Ely is to encourage through example, education and community collaboration the efficient use of all forms of energy in the Ely area.

From one of our Outfitting Clients (you'll love this one!)

Hi Drew! The 2nd graders in Renee's class recently worked on a project titled, "Where in the World have you Been?" Renee decided she would write a report about her Boundary Waters trip and show off a beautiful photo album Patrice made for us after our trip. Patrice included some lovely photos and we added some of our own. Anyways, we thought you'd enjoy reading Renee's report. :)

Have a great Spring!

Tammy Lambas
