News from Piragis Northwoods Company and the BoundaryWatersCatalog.com:

"Society seems noxious. I believe that against these baleful influences Nature is the antidote. The man comes out of the wrangle of the shop and office, sees the sky and woods, and is a man again. But how few men see the sky and woods!"

Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the Beginning by Cliff Jacobson

It began in 1974, when friends Bob Brown, Darrell Foss, and I decided to build wood-strip solo canoes. I constructed the MCA (Minnesota Canoe Association) 14 footer and Darrell followed suit with a similarly styled boat of his own design. Brownie, a free spirit in these matters, stripped up a tippy freestyle canoe which he lovingly named "Itty Bit". On her baptism, Itty Bit promptly dumped Bob into a back water of the Mississippi, upon which, Darrell and I re-christened her "tender bit".

The idea was to field-test the three divergent designs in an untamed wilderness environment. At trip's end, the best boat would earn for its owner, all the Molson's he could drink.

After studying dozens of routes, we settled on the Steel River, in northern Ontario. It had everything we could ask for--thin, shallow streams and beaver ponds, testy rapids to Class III, picturesque waterfalls, a 25 mile lake, and a two mile mega-portage (at the very start!) over chest-high boulders that gained 400 feet of elevation in the first half mile. We agreed that the Steel would provide a perfect test for our new solo canoes.

Our first stop was Terrace Bay, where cafe owner D.E. Miller had agreed to shuttle our vehicle to trip's end.

Notes from the Wild

"I want to again compliment you and your staff. Very impressive! I own and operate a physical therapy and fitness company in Washington, and I can appreciate the work you have done to create such a quality company. I have been working with Drew for the past four years; I sincerely appreciate his knowledge, enthusiasm and professionalism. It is a blessing to have such quality people as Drew and all of your staff supporting the goals you have, as the owner, set. You should be very proud of yourself and your staff.

Our trip began with fly-in to Beaverhouse Lk. We picked the "road less traveled" by paddling through Jean, Sturgeon and Fred. We weaved our way southward to Delahey, Suanette, Mcintyre and Kett; catching walleye, lakers and smalleys all the way. We saw very few people on our trek; which is what we're looking for in Quetico. Two weeks, many portages, amazing scenery and several novels after beginning our trip, we came out at Basswood and eventually took out at Fall Lake Campground boat dock.

My son and I have been making this vacation a tradition since he was 13. We both love the time together and the memories each trip has created. Your company has been a big part of this tradition; we hope to continue our relationship with Piragis for many years."

ONE SPOT LEFT on our African Safari. Make it happen in 2009!

Only 1 spots left, sign up today for only $2500 plus airfare.

African safaris are frequently very expensive and lavish.  But, there is an alternative to the high priced wine and cheese safaris.  There is even a benefit to the less expensive tour.  The group is tiny.  We camp safely where the animals are and the other people are not.  And, the chef is the guide, the company owner and the jeep driver all in one.  I am looking for two or more clients to accompany me to Africa for a tour of Botswanna, South Africa and Zambia.  The highlights include visiting 2 of the top 10 game reserves in Africa.  Good chances of seeing Africa’s largest herds of wildebeest and zebra and the elephant eating lions of Savuti.  We’ll visit Khama Rhino Reserve, Makgadigadi Gamer Reserve, Moreni Game Reserve of the Okavonga Delta and the famous Chobe National Park.  Most nights we camp in safe, comfortable tents perched on platforms atop the jeeps.  Sean Stones is our guide and chief cook.  Some clients say the trip is worth it just for the campfire cooking.  There are openings the last two weeks of September when the wildebeest migration just might be underway.

10 days in Botswana, 4 days in South Africa.

This safari includes the following highlights; the scenic Waterburg region of South Africa, one of the largest reserves in Africa – The Central Kalahari, one of Africa’s most well known ‘Natural wonders’ – the Okavango Delta, the third largest Zebra and Wildebeest migration and two of Africa’s top 10 rated game reserves; Moremi game reserve on the shores of the Delta and Chobe game reserve in Northern Botswana.

An excellent all round safari offering exceptional game viewing, Excellent birding, and a variety of changing ecosystems.

You will also be spoiled with fine food, wine and a qualified guide (humor for free).

COSTS
$2500 each plus Airfare

Join Kim McCluskey paddling in Vietnam September 9 - 22.

Dear friends,

It will soon be time to paddle among the many islands of Ha Long Bay. We will live on a beautiful support boat, with cabins above deck and bathrooms with hot showers in each room. In the daytime we will paddle to floating fishing villages, explore sea caves and visit the local people. When we return to the boat, there will be gourmet meals of fresh fish, shrimp, crab, squid and many other Vietnamese delights.

After five days we will return to Hanoi and then head up north to Ba Be Lake. We will stay at the village chief's house, up on stilts and with bamboo floors. We will go swimming in a jungle waterfall, go to Hill Tribe Market day and spend a day paddling the Ba Be river. The last couple of nights will be spent at a small lodge near the lake.

As many of you know, I have been building schools in this area for several years. On the last night we invite the teachers to the lodge for dinner. With the help of interpreters we can ask questions and find out what life is like for the young teachers who get their assignments in this mountainous region. We will also have the opportunity to visit a couple of the schools we have built. On this trip a writer friend from a national magazine will be joining us. She will be doing a story on traveling Vietnam.

We need at least two more guests to join before I can start reserving hotels. I will lead this trip myself and look forward to showing you the many special places Vietnam has to offer.

Life's blessings,

km
