Your Friends in the Great Northwoods

News from Piragis Northwoods Company and the BoundaryWatersCatalog.com:

"Hey Drew,
Just a note of thanks for your help: you are a great asset for Piragis. We had another great trip; very few people back in the innards of Quetico. I think I told you that Wes and I are probably going to Alaska for our vacation next year; maybe not though. Ely seems like a second home to us after spending our last 8 summer vacations there.

You take care and have a great summer. Best wishes!"

News from the Outfitting Desk  by Bert Heep

CANOE SEASON IS ALMOST HERE
Hey folks - I don’t know about you, but I am chomping at the bit to get out and paddle and camp in the Boundary Waters or Quetico Park. I go through this every year at about the same time. The snow is getting old. The days are getting longer and the sun stronger. I start counting the days until ice-out time, and the way I count it, we are looking at about 50 DAYS plus or minus. That is a flash in the pan folks - before we know it the water will be soft again. Yippee. Ok, some people would think that I have a problem, but if you are reading this you know that is not true. I have a PASSION TO PADDLE, and I know you do too. So, where am I going with this? I know some of you plan to take a canoe trip this summer, but you have not called us to get your permit and reserve your canoes. Fifty days folks, that is not far away, so get on the phone or send me or Drew an email and we will get that trip of yours all set to go.

CANOECOPIA, March 12-14
Stop by our booth and say hello to Drew Brockett and Tom Vidmar. These two handsome guys will be there to answer your questions, give you suggestions for this year’s trip, and even book your dates. I will be here in the office, so they can call me and I can get your permit right away.

GUIDED GROUP TRIPS
Many of our Group Trips are starting to fill up, so if you are thinking about joining us, give us a call soon. Go to this link at our website and check out the variety of trips we offer, the dates, and the costs. http://www.piragis.com/outfitting/guidedgrouptrips.html.

The Smallmouth Trip, June 12-18 is one super trip. Last year the guys actually got sore wrists from catching so many fish. I am serious, this is not sales hype. If you like to catch Smallmouth Bass, lunker Northern Pike, and Walleye for dinner - this trip is for you. We have professional guides who are top notch fishermen, the best canoes and equipment available. We can’t GUARANTEE that you will catch fish - well, yes we can. So give us a call today.

We still have some openings in our Women’s Trip. Dates are July 10-16. All women - no men. Professional women guides. Great time of bonding with other women in a wilderness setting. In fact, after these trips the women come back raving about what a great time they had - it makes a few of us guys want to “sneak” our way on the trip. Maybe we could hide in a pack. That would be one heavy pack - but it might work.

QUETICO PERMITS
Perhaps some of you obtain your permits for Quetico Park yourself rather than having us get one for you. Well, no doubt you have experienced the frustration of the process. Canada has initiated a new reservation system for all Provincial Parks in Canada, including Quetico Park. If you are having problems or are confused by some of the changes, give us a call and we will take care of everything for you. Honest - we can do it for you.

FLY-IN CANOE TRIPS
If you have never taken a fly-in canoe trip to Quetico Park you are missing the experience of a lifetime. Take off in a Beaver, fly over the wilderness, marvel at all of the lakes that stretch from horizon to horizon, drop down onto your chosen lake, unstrap your canoe from the pontoon, put your gear in your canoe, jump in and off you go. Instant wilderness, solitude, and phenomenal fishing are yours. Call us and let us tell you how it is done and what it will cost. I promise you - you will not regret it.

That’s it for now folks. We love to paddle. We love to talk to other people about paddling. We love helping people like you set up a trip that will refresh your spirit, hone your muscles, and make you glad you are alive and live in such a wonderful world. Drew and I are here for you. Seven days a week, from 6 am until 6 pm. Call us. Email us. Send us a letter. Send us a carrier pigeon with a note attached. Pony express. Whatever it takes. We'll answer!

Thanks

Bert Heep

Trekking with Wolves
By GREG BREINING
Published: February 21, 2010

WINTER strips the wilderness of color: white snow, gray ice, the Dalmatian spots of paper birches. The somber green of pine and spruce and claret stems of red osier are vivid in comparison. Simple forms stand in high relief: a black pool of open water flanked by snow, daggers of ice plunging from slaty rocks, low sun, long shadows. The effect is striking, as austere and beautiful as an Ansel Adams print.

We've still got snow for snowshoeing and skiing!

One of the best things about Winter is being able to travel on top of water by snowshoe or skis. It is a great chance to get up a little higher than you normally are during canoe travel and cover some "open" country quickly and quietly. It is one of our favorite things to do here in Ely. If you get a chance to visit, fill out a day permit and go see the pictographs at Hegman Lake.

Rent a cabin near Ely and see how great the Northwoods can be!
March is approaching fast, and here in NE Minnesota the best part of winter is about to begin. In fact, the last 10 days have been superb for xc skiing, snowshoeing and crappie fishing. We have days of sunshine and glorious star studded clear nights. The days are much longer allowing the days to warm substantially, just a few days ago we had a morning temp of -20 and by mid-afternoon were were basking in the mid twenties.

"Crust" skiing is not far off. The snow on the lakes starts to crust up in March and when the conditions are right, you can skate ski effortlessly for miles across the frozen lakes. This time of the year you are likely to see otters sliding across the lake, returning eagles and of course wolves. They too know that lake travel is the only way to get around fast. It really is one of the best times of the year to enjoy the BWCAW.
Give us a call and let us reserve you some time this March at:

EPA criticizes PolyMet proposal

February 24, 2010

Finding many of the same problems with the PolyMet mine proposal as the Friends did in its comments on the Draft EIS, the Environmental Protection Agency has said that, as proposed, the first sulfide mine in Minnesota “may have substantial and unacceptable adverse impacts on aquatic resources of national importance.”

In its comment letter to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the two lead government agencies on the environmental review), the EPA gave the DEIS the lowest rating possible.

In its comments, the EPA stated the all waste rock at the mine site would be acid generating, “and acidic water moving through the waste rock and tailings will mobilize metal and sulfates, leaching them into groundwater and surface water. The DEIS projects that water quality standards will be exceeded for sulfates and other contaminants
