News from the Outfitting Desk

The paddling season is getting closer, at least the weather up here in the Arrowhead makes us feel that way. The temperatures have been well above average and we are basically out of snow. Pretty amazing. Maybe it’s time to get the road bikes out and hit the highways. However nice it has been, though, it’s still early, and the weather is turning much colder next week. So, maybe we’ll just get the bikes ready instead.

Our newest group trip – Wilderness Camping Skills with Steve Johnson – is also our first sponsored trip of the season. The dates are May 15-21 and if you’ve ever wanted to learn about many different aspects of being in the wilderness, Steve is the perfect one for the job. He has been our senior guide for years and many of our trippers have found out why he is a top guide in this area as well as internationally. He knows the woods better than anyone. Join him for this fully outfitted trip into the Boundary Waters. There are still spots available so sign up soon to learn from one of the best. The price is $1395 + tax.

For all of you who still need to plan your trips, remember that we’ll want to get a permit soon so you get the entry point that you are looking for. Then we can get all the other details set such as canoe, pack, or tent rental. We do partial outfitting and will rent just about anything to you that you don’t have in your own supplies. But, if you want us to take care of everything, you can go with our Full Outfitting package. All you need to do is bring your clothes, personal items and fishing gear. We make it easy for you and you’ll be getting some of the newest and best equipment for this area. Either way, call Bert or Drew and get your reservation in so you can check that off your list of things to do before the summer season is upon us.

We look forward to talking with you and helping plan your wilderness adventure. Please call or email Bert or Drew to set up your trip today!

GUIDED GROUP TRIPS
Many of our Group Trips are starting to fill up, so if you are thinking about joining us, give us a call soon. Go to this link at our website and check out the variety of trips we offer, the dates, and the costs. http://www.piragis.com/outfitting/guidedgrouptrips.html.

The Smallmouth Trip, June 12-18 is one super trip. Last year the guys actually got sore wrists from catching so many fish. I am serious, this is not sales hype. If you like to catch Smallmouth Bass, lunker Northern Pike, and Walleye for dinner - this trip is for you. We have professional guides who are top notch fishermen, the best canoes and equipment available. We can’t GUARANTEE that you will catch fish - well, yes we can. So give us a call today.

We still have some openings in our Women’s Trip. Dates are July 10-16. All women - no men. Professional women guides. Great time of bonding with other women in a wilderness setting. In fact, after these trips the women come back raving about what a great time they had - it makes a few of us guys want to “sneak” our way on the trip. Maybe we could hide in a pack. That would be one heavy pack - but it might work.

Contact Bert or Drew to start working on next year's permits and trips.

Early Paddling? Not out of the Question

Sure it is very early, but! But! We've had a couple of weeks with days that reached the fifties. Ice is getting thinner on the lakes and is gone on some river stretches. An Outward Bound instructor stopped in the other day and told us about a fun day trip their crew took to celebrate the end of the winter season. They paddled the south Kawishiwi river from the Filson Creek entry point off the Spruce road to the Outward Bound school. Most of the river was open although they had to pull their canoes across a few stretches of ice. Not a trip for novices or the faint of heart but a fun way to get a jump start on the canoeing season for experienced paddlers.
