Your Friends in the Great Northwoods

News from Piragis Northwoods Company and the BoundaryWatersCatalog.com:

"Bert,

Thank you for the outfitting services. I mentioned this to Drew on the phone last night; you run a top notch outfit! The drivers Max and Tom were excellent and the snickers/sodas were a nice touch! I have attached a photo of Mike with his new friend Marge a 10 pounder – 33” taken out of Bald Eagle. The walleyes were biting well, some on jigs/leeches at 12 feet but most of them on rapalas trolling in 6-9 feet of water.

Thanks again for a fun weekend!

Pete Miller

Stories from the Great Northwoods

"
A thousand thanks to you guys! We sincerely appreciate your kind and knowledgeable staff. We couldn't have had more fun. (Well if the weather was nicer, but you tell me when you guys can start controlling that!) The trip was exactly what we were looking for. Lots of good fishing and short portages for the old man. The food was great! It was a lot easier to prepare than I expected and tasted amazing. We were never hungry! In fact we had to make extra meal times to even try and eat all the food. We will definitely use Piragis again and refer all our buddies for a great time. Thank you to Drew and they other guys!" Mike, Jake and Steve Thelin

"This was our 21st trip through Piragis Northwoods.  We really like their friendly staff and appreciate their knowledge of canoeing and camping in the Quetico and the Boundary Waters.  Their rental equipment is the best and provides the opportunity to try out the latest in a paddling and camping equipment.  This year it was the new Kevlar paddles and the light weight rain tarp.  Both were great equipment additions. We found the Wenonah paddle to be super light and durable and the rain tarp adaptable to different campsite situations.

If you are planning your first canoe trip, Piragis Northwoods is the place I suggest you start."

"Hey folks!

It is getting toasty where my wife and I live in Austin, TX. We’re already looking forward next winter’s trip out on the lakes! I subscribe to your blog, and saw the post on the PV. I knew Steve was working on renewable because we read the Echo and Timberjay, but I did not know you were about to put panels on the roof. I linked to your post on my blog. http://helpwithgreen.blogspot.com/

Keep up the great work." Chuck Zeugner

Special Piragis Group Trip to Africa Trip dates in November

Trip Cost per person from Maun $7566. Estimated Cost of Airfare on Delta from Atlanta $1600 rt

Botswana, in the center of the south of the African Continent, is among the earth’s best preserved ecosystems. It’s a world away from North America, almost a different planet with its amazing variety of animals. In two weeks on our tour you’ll see all the major game animals, a dozen or more antelope species, perhaps 200 varieties of birds and live for a time in three distinct ecosystems. The camps of the our host company, Wilderness Safaris, are clean, comfortable, well stocked with food and drink and always located in the private parts of the national parks.

You fly to Johannesburg South Africa via Atlanta and on to Maun, Botswana. We’ll visit 3 remote camps in the Okavango Delta, the Chobe National Park and the Zambezi River. After a visit to spectacular Victoria Falls we fly down stream to Mana Pools National Park and 3 days of paddling and camping along the Zambezi River. Our adventure in Africa is specially designed for our group to experience the best of the best in southern Africa in 13 days. You may never want to leave and I’m sure you’ll want to come back.

Please call us personally to discuss this trip. The group is limited to 7 guests and me as liaison to be sure all your needs are met.

I'm currently kayaking in Greenland. To book this adventure in Africa call Tim Stouffer or drop him an email to mac@piragis.com

Insightful Advice on Canoe Stroke Efficiency

By George Arimond, Ph.D.

"These two visuals show correct and incorrect technique with respect to the paddle shaft angle.  This is a very common error [i.e. shaft not vertical].  When this error is made, it causes the paddle blade tip to make a slight arcing action.  This arcing action has a similar affect as a sweep stroke.  In other words, it causes the canoe to gradually turn away from the paddling side with each stroke.  To compensate for the canoe turning excessively, the stern paddler must use more J strokes to compensate.  Having to ‘J’ more slows the canoe more.  To summarize, maintaining a vertical shaft significantly increases the canoe’s speed and lessens the amount of steering strokes [J stroke] the stern paddler must make.

I see this error even amongst paddlers who have paddled for many years, logging in hundreds or thousands of miles.  Once this paddling error becomes a habit, it does take some time to consciously overcome it."
