Fall in the Boundary Waters means no bugs, fewer people, warm days, cool nights, and great vistas of saturated yellows, reds, and green. Travel the BWCAW during the quiet season and see the boreal forest in all its vibrant splendor. The colors start early in September with the maples and peak with the great forests of aspen and birch in late September and early October. These reds and yellows are all offset by the beautiful dark green of the balsam, spruce, and pine with a backdrop of incredibly blue sky. With wildlife on the move in fall, chances of seeing moose, bear, otter and beaver are optimal. With some luck the howl of the wolf will sing you to sleep

The Boundary Waters Wilderness has been home to wolves since the retreat of the glaciers. From your campsites, you can still hear wolves lonely howls or catch a glimpse of one along the lakeshore or portage. We’ll start our week by studying captive wolves at the International Wolf Center and visit sites where wild wolves are known to rendezvous. Our 5-day canoe trip in the wilderness puts us in intimate contact with the wolves’ habitat, where signs of their presence are common. We’ll paddle through wild country where man is just a visitor. We’ll camp on lakes where visitors are rare and with some luck we’ll hear or maybe even see a wolf. If wolves fascinate you please call and join us in wolf country

Hundreds of years ago, our canoe country was traveled by some of history’s most colorful characters, the Voyageurs. Theirs is a rich and interesting story. We explore the Voyageur Highway in a handmade, 26 foot wooden canoe, paddling as a team, along the US/Canadian border and sometimes even staying at some of the Voyageur’s campsites. Of course, our packs will not be as heavy as theirs and our paddling days will not be as long. Our food will definitely be better and we will sleep in tents, not under the canoe. These diminutive French/Canadians had to travel hard and fast in order to make money for the company, but our pace will be slower so we can enjoy the haunting beauty of this unique wilderness. We may even try to sing some of the old Voyageur songs, but don’t worry, a good singing voice is not a requirement for this trip, just a healthy dose of enthusiasm. Paddle back in time to the fur trade era of the 17th century with the Northwoods Company this summer

Join new friends on a wilderness experience this summer. Paddle, portage and camp in America’s canoe country with other women who share your spirit of adventure. This is our most highly rated trip by past participants, and judging by the laugh meter it must be the most fun, too. Take a break from the humdrum and discover a pristine wilderness and maybe a little about yourself at the same time

THE BOUNDARY WATERS (BWCAW) and QUETICO PROVINCIAL PARK... The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, when combined with Canada's Quetico Provincial Park, just across the border, offers over two million acres of island-studded lakes and pine-covered forests that are accessible only to canoeists. The Boundary Waters Wilderness a place of intriguing interest and unparalleled beauty. Hundreds of miles of water routes wind through hundreds of lakes, past dozens of cascading waterfalls and around scores of rushing rapids. The only way to see it is from a canoe. Motorboats are prohibited from all of the interior lakes and from most of the fringe lakes. No one is permitted to live in the BWCA and no man-made structures are allowed there. Created by glaciers and protected by the Federal Government, the BWCAW is a very special, natural place.
