Folding PakCanoe Canoes and
The original reason people bought PakCanoes was to solve a logistical problem. Flying with hard boats was expensive, and some people were willing to try something new. The surprise for many was that PakCanoes are quite rugged and perform well. Due to the flexible hull, they carry a load in rough conditions with less loss of freeboard than hard boats do. The reason is that the flexible hull lets the boat conform to the wave so the weight of the loaded boat is spread over a longer (floating) area, thus increasing freeboard. Similar factors are in play to let the PakCanoe climb over waves rather than crash into them and take on water.
Less obvious factors are related to the inflatable tubes along each side. The first function of the tubes is the way they increase tension in the canoe skin as you inflate the tubes to pressure. The tubes also add flotation more flotation than the new paddlecraft manufacturing standards will call for, and they place the flotation where it does the most good, so the PakCanoe will float stable and upright if it is swamped. And the tubes act as built-in fenders. This is an advantage you may not appreciate until you are lining your canoe on an Arctic river some day.
Both PakCanoes and inflatable canoes can be packed into a portable package, and both have a sturdy outside fabric surface. But most inflatable canoes are fairly short, and the inflatable chambers take up a lot of room, so there is less space for gear in an inflatable. Inflatable canoes are great for heavy whitewater, but they are much slower than PakCanoes on flatwater. In terms of whitewater capability, PakCanoes are at least equal to traditional canoes.
XT Touring Kayaks
The XT’s have a very stiff frame structure. This has made it possible to build longer, sleeker hulls without
compromising structural integrity. The XT-15 is a very sporty solo kayak. Short overhangs at both ends give this 15-footer the waterline length of an average 16-foot kayak. Its excellent paddling performance makes it a joy for experienced kayakers, and its solid stability builds confidence in novice paddlers. XT-16 is a compact double with excellent performance. Both XTs have removable decks, which makes them incredibly easy to load. The XT-16 can be outfitted with a solo deck, making it an excellent expedition solo. If you consider the affordable prices, XTs make a package that is impossible to beat.

Starting with the similarities between all Pakboats they have lots of built-in flotation placed along the sides to keep them upright and stable if they are swamped. Puffins share with PakCanoes much better hull speeds than inflatables. If you want to cover distance in a packable kayak, you want to be in a folding one. If you are on a budget, you will like the Puffin a lot.
Many inflatables are less expensive than Puffins, so why would anybody buy a Puffin? If all you want to do is get on the water and sit, your best bet may well be an inflatable. But the frame structure in a Puffin provides cleaner, more efficient lines and better paddling performance. And similar size inflatables weigh about 50% more than Puffins.
The Puffin design is very simple, but we have always used the same materials in Puffins and PakCanoes. Since PakCanoes are proven expedition boats, Puffins are lightweight because of their simple design, but they are in no way flimsy boats.
