photo #Timyb11" class="aimg"> Waves

Sitting by this fire, the energy,
latent in the downed, dry wood, rushes over us,
released from forest floor and the touch of flame,
having waited patiently to give voice after death,
like music washing through me,
a playlist you might not remember from the Eighties,
Pixies, Soundgarden, Joy Division, Cure B sides,
something else from Seattle,
the birth of The Flaming Lips…

Noise that doesn’t resonate here in the envelope of solitude,
but soaks in with the same revival of muscle memory
felt sharp across the shoulder blades
and in the tendonitis of my right elbow,
paddle hardened, lake truth.
I understand this is hard to explain,
my impression of the transfer of energy,
to the wave of
warmth delivered,
coals banking, minutes eaten,
while,
the pan with steaks waits patiently,
a first paddling trip’s reward
for numb toes, fingers and frost
collected between the shoulder blades,
fleece expelling sweat equity.

But here it is, soon the heat will seep away,
over the rocks, through the woods,
the colors will fade into evening
and the loons will pick up the melody.
Soon it will feel like we had
never left. Like
this was the only song.
